Thinking about Packaging

I'm working on a few simple bits of packaging for my products - long overdue, I think! Nothing too fancy, just something simple to give me space for pricing & product info, my website address etc, & hopefully make my pieces look a bit smarter in the process.

I'm thinking about using white or brown strung tags in assorted sizes, some smaller ones to tie to masks and ornaments, and larger ones to pin my brooches to like so:
(And yes, I know those aren't white or brown- they're just the only tags I had in the house to test this out, shh)

I like how this can accommodate brooches of lots of different shapes and sizes, unlike plastic bags which I've found either end up too tiny and squished or a bit empty and disappointing looking, and the back has plenty of room for a printed label.

I rather like the look of the handwritten descriptions at the bottom, too, but I'm a bit worried my scribblings might be a bit too illegible! Perhaps if I use my very best handwriting? Hmm...

I use my alphabet stamp set on mine as my handwriting is a bit...well....not the best! ;)

i LOVE using office supplies in my packaging. it also seems to be quite affordable and doesnt really impact the cost of your handmade goods. i'm currently in a card making kick. i simply use a piece of scrap cardstock cut into a uniform 5x3, fold it in half (it will help protect the paper and gives the customer a place to touch), write the details on the top side (front and back) and use a simple silver (recycled) paperclip to hold the info card, card and envelope together.

i love to use shipping tags for info on my class samples.

as for printing, i use my hand writing, stamps (i have my info printed on a rubber stamp) and occassionally printed from word. i think the mix is nice. everything is a little different, but pretty well the same.

How fun! I'm working on packaging right now, too. Something simple, but that really compliments the items. It's a fun process indeed!

I think they look lovely, and I also think that the brown tags would be best as they just look cooler

Also, handwriting gives it that definately handmade look and its such pretty handwriting it would be a shame not to use it

You could make a font out of your handwriting. It will look pretty and legible all the time, no matter how tired you are!
On the web there are some free services of this kind. I have a link at my home pc, if you are interested I will be back with details!

my business cards. If you put them on with the writing part facing the front you can write the info on the back. I use my hole punch and punch 2 holes that fit the ends of the pinbacks. That way when they buy something from me they know how to reach me again and what they bought from me. It accomplishes a two-fold purpose.

I, too, love using office supplies. I have a real sickness for them!

nice. :) I've taken to using beads on my string of my labels when I'm wrapping stuff up. You DID just get some fabulous teapot buttons. It'd be pretty nifty if you incorporated those into your tags.

btw. I've been using all that lovely pastel felt i got from you this week. You'll find the results pretty hilarious ^_^ keep an eye out on Tumus.

Thanks for all the comments everyone! :)

I've got a link to a handwriting font-maker around here somewhere... might be a nice addition to my labels.

Ooh I like the thought of added beads... Teapot buttons would be ace but they are in very limited supply and being saved for special projects. I might try and use my stash of felt scraps somehow - they are never-ending!

Anything that avoids plastic bags is a very good thing! I use packaging tags for my brooches too. They make for versitile display options. I rubber stamp mine with my logo as this helps 'brand' them. Although in a panic putting one together for a birthday present a 2 seconds before the recipient walked in, I came up with a fab display which I'll be using at Handmade cambridge... I'll be posting it on my blog once I've perfected it!
