Have a Very Mollie Makes Christmas

The third edition of Mollie Makes Christmas is out now!

This year's edition of this festive bookazine contains over 100 crafty projects - gifts to make, festive decorating ideas, and more.

Did you spot a familiar little birdie on the cover...?

Yup, it's my Partridge & Pear wreath! (The wreath originally appeared in Mollie Makes #59).

It's lovely to see the wreath back in print, and peeking out from newsagent shelves once more. It was a total joy seeing the wreaths people made popping up on social media - if you make one this year (or even just a partridge or pear ornament) do let me know!

My wreath is in excellent company as the mag is jam-packed with fab, crafty projects from past issues of Mollie Makes.

I especially love this blanket cape...

... and these snowy mountain mittens!

There are also some exclusive notecards and gift tags to use for your winter gifting.

Mollie Makes Christmas is in newsagents now, or you can buy it online here. The digital edition is available from Apple Newsstand (in the Mollie Makes app under ‘Special Editions’).

Thanks to the team at Mollie Makes for sending me a contributor copy of the mag! xxx

July in Pictures: Lots of Flowers, Infinite Pumpkins, a Giant Ice Cream and a Very Long Walk

July was pretty busy! Let's take a look at what I got up to...

At the start of the month I went to Windsor and walked all the way along the Long Walk and back. It was a rather long way (and, I'm not gonna lie, I kinda regretted the decision two thirds of the way along) but 100% worth it for this fabulous view back to the Castle.

I wrote some letters and cards to my friends and penpals and shared a pic of some of the lovely snail mail I'd recently received (is there anything nicer than getting a bit of happy mail?).

I went to London for the day and came back with treats: a gorgeous mini tray from Liberty (in my all time fave Liberty print) and a book from Daunt Books. I was supposed to be sticking to a tight budget in July (and mostly succeeded!) but couldn't resist these lovelies, both of which I've had my eye on for simply ages.

In the evenings, I was working on a couple of personal projects including a tiny scarf for a polar bear! The bear is one of Alicia Paulson's charming felt ornament patterns. I've been slooooowly making these since buying a bundle of her kits a few years ago (too many projects, too little time!) and have re-started them in the hope that I will actually have some finished in time for Christmas this year.

Those super skinny knitting needles belonged to my late grandmother. It's always quite moving using her old tools to make stuff - I actually wrote about this a couple of years ago.

I also started something new: an embroidery project inspired by the late great website The Toast. I have a friend who loved the site, so I decided to stitch her something inspired by one of its unofficial mottoes. I had so much fun stitching this and posted lots of in-progress pics... I'll be blogging about it in more detail soon :)

In the middle of the month I went to see the incredible Yayoi Kusama exhibition at the Victoria Miro gallery. The mirror rooms were particularly amazing. You only got about 30 seconds in each room but it was totally worth it (and I was lucky to visit when the exhibition was quiet - I heard people were queuing for over two hours in the final week!).

This piece is called "All the Eternal Love I Have for the Pumpkins". "Chandelier of Grief" was also amazing.

Later that week I went on a photo-taking-tour of London with Kate and friends. We visited lots of Art Deco stations on the Piccadilly Line oohing over architectural details, taking lots and lots of photos, and generally having a lovely, happy, nerdy day out.

This is my favourite station of the day, the gorgeous seven-sided ticket hall at Hounslow West. The staff were most perplexed by us all showing up with our cameras, so it's clearly a hidden gem

Back at home, the garden was looking lovely in the sunshine. How amazing are these hydrangeas?? Like the hydrangeas, I wilt a little in the heat and neither of us was especially happy in the mini heatwave we had in late July. I spent a lot of time in the shadiest place I could find and ate a lot of ice cream!

The new issue of Mollie Makes came out, which was exciting because it includes three projects designed by me (yay!). Click here to read more about my makes for this issue.

I spent a lot of July working on felt flower patterns for my shop. I will, of course, be blogging about the patterns when they're ready for sale... in the meantime there's lots of felt to cut out and sew, photographs to take and edit, instructions to type up and proofread, templates to draw and label, etc etc etc.

Cutting out lots of flower pieces means a big pile of colourful felt scraps! I love the sculptural look of these.

In between working on my new patterns, I took a day off and went to Cookham to visit the Stanley Spencer Gallery (click here to see a snippet from my train journey through the countryside!).

I spent a very relaxing couple of hours exploring the village (expect a blog post as soon as I've got my photos edited!) and discovered that (contrary to my previous belief) you CAN have too much ice cream when I accidentally ordered the world's largest Mr Whippy (oops). I tried to finish it but, sadly, it defeated me.

At the end of long days of crafty work you might think the last thing I'd want to do is more crafting, but you'd be wrong. In the last week of July I kept myself entertained in the evenings by adding some more stitches to my ongoing "using up my scrappy leftover bits of embroidery thread" cross stitch project...

... and sewing together some of the white squares for my mini patchwork squares blanket. I've got lots more squares to knit (then sew together) - I must remember to buy some more white yarn!

I finished the month working on more flowers. These are just some of the samples I'm stitching for my new patterns. I want to make my tutorials as useful as possible so I'm including lots of variations and project ideas along with the basic pattern... which means lots of pieces to cut and sew.

I'm really pleased with how these patterns are coming together, I can't wait until they're finished so I can do the big reveal and finally get them listed in my shop (and get started on the other ideas I've got in my sketchbook!).

Knitting, sewing, cross stitch... art, walks, architecture... flowers, nice post and tasty ice cream. All in all, July turned out to be a pretty good month :)

I'll share another Instagram round-up next month. I'm lauralupinhoward on Instagram - click here to visit my page and follow me.

Four Fun Felt Projects for Mollie Makes #69

I got an exciting bit of post this week - a copy of this month's Mollie Makes magazine.

Why am I so excited about the arrival of this magazine, you ask?

Well, a familiar face makes an appearance this issue...

... yup, you guessed it, it's me! Yay! :)

The cover gift that comes free with Mollie Makes #69 is a kit for making a fabulous felt pom pom necklace, designed by Yoko Minemura Vega.

You also get a little booklet that contains three bonus projects: alternative ideas for using the materials in the kit... and those three projects were designed by me! (Double yay!)

I had loads of fun making these projects a few months ago, it's so nice seeing them styled so gorgeously by the Mollie Makes team.

You can choose from three home decor projects. A felt bouquet...

... a mini mobile...

... or a Scandi-inspired cushion.

I also designed a fourth project - a scalloped necklace. The necklace didn't fit in the printed booklet, so the lovely folks at Mollie Makes have shared it as a free project over on their blog. (Triple yay!).

Issue 69 of Mollie Makes is out now in the UK and is available in all good newsagents, supermarkets and independent craft shops, or from the official online store.

A Felt Reindeer + Fabric Hydrangeas

I love working on projects for magazines but my favourite part is definitely the bit where I get to spill the beans about what I've been making!

Today I get to show you what I made for this month's issues of Creativity and Mollie Makes...

For issue 64 of docrafts Creativity magazine, I turned a plain grey jumper into a Christmas jumper with a felt applique reindeer design:

The antlers have little jingle bells attached and the reindeer's nose and tail are fluffy pompoms. So much fun!

Can't find docrafts Creativity Magazine in your local newsagent? You can subscribe here or buy individual issues here.

Then for the new issue of Mollie Makes, I made some faux hydrangeas from fabric:

It takes a while to cut out and put together all those petals, but it's totally worth it.

You'll find the template and step by step instructions to make your own hydrangeas in issue 60 of Mollie Makes, which is out now in the UK and available from newsagents, supermarkets or online. The digital edition is available to download from Zinio, Google Play or Apple Newsstand.

A Partridge & Pear Wreath for Mollie Makes

If you follow me on Twitter or Facebook you'll know I have some exciting news: I made a Christmas wreath for the new issue of Mollie Makes and it's on the cover! Eep!

It's a partridge and pear wreath, with lots of sparkly felt leaves:

The wreath was a huge amount of fun to make, and it's so exciting seeing it on the cover (especially on the shelves of my local newsagent).

If you don't want to make the whole wreath, you can use the tutorial to make a set of partridge and pear felt ornaments for your Christmas tree. I was thrilled to spot that someone has already stitched a pear ornament from my pattern!

Mollie Makes issue 59 is out now in the UK, available from newsagents, supermarkets or online. The digital edition is available to download from Zinio, Google Play or Apple Newsstand.

If you buy a copy and make the wreath (or an ornament or two) do let me know! :)

Stitching a Heart for the Craftivist Collective & Mollie Makes

If you're a Mollie Makes fan, maybe you've spotted the little something I stitched for the latest issue?

It's a felt heart for the Craftivist Collective's new Heart on your Sleeve campaign!

This campaign is such a fun idea: asking people to stitch green hearts with what they love, wear them and share them online as part of a positive, inspirational, creative conversation.

It was quite tricky choosing what to stitch for my heart, but after a purr-filled kitty cuddle during my tea break I realised I had to pick my cats! I love those little furballs so much.

Mollie Makes #57 is out now. You can read more about the Craftivist Collective on their website and you'll find them on social media as @craftivists.

You Never Know What a Blog Post Will Lead To...

It's just two weeks until Blogtacular - an awesome-looking conference for creative bloggers. I treated myself to a ticket last year and have been looking forward to it ever since (especially after it was announced that Grace Bonney will be the keynote speaker!)

With the conference looming I've been thinking a lot about blogging: why I do it, what I enjoy most about it, where I see my blog heading in the coming months, and so on. Despite an attack of imposter syndrome and occasional patches of blogger's block I've loved my 8+ years of blogging and all the inspiration, connections, friendships and unexpected opportunities that have come along with it.

One very unexpected thing that happened this month was that I did some decluttering, blogged about my childhood eraser collection... and ended up having the collection featured in Mollie Makes!

It is thrilling (if slightly surreal) to have one of my childhood collections in print in one of my favourite crafty magazines - especially as I originally wrote the blog post thinking "this is a bit of a random thing to be blogging about, I wonder if anyone will be remotely interested in this???"

I'm delighted that so many people will get to bask in the glory of my collection (haha) and I hope it sparks lots of nostalgic conversations about the things they all collected as kids.

It just goes to show that you never know what will happen when you press "publish" on a new blog post!

My eraser collection is featured in the current issue of Mollie Makes (#54). Click here for a preview and for stockist info.

Two Nice Things

You know, I'm always reading blogging advice that says "Titles are important! Make sure they're SEO friendly! Include lots of keywords!" ... and then I keep titling posts things like "Two Nice Things" because, well, that's what it feels right to call this post!

I am clearly a bad, bad blogger :)

So, what are these two nice things, you ask?

Well, first up I have been positively squeeeeee-ing at seeing this month's issue of Mollie Makes out "in the wild" - on the shelf in newsagents, popping up on Facebook &Twitter and over on Instagram (#molliemakes).

It is always so surreal and awesome seeing something I designed out in the world, being seen and (I hope!) sewn by lots of people.

(Psst - do check out Leanne's blog, Knit Me A Cake and her posts about knitting a sky blanket).

And the second nice thing? Flicking through a copy of Reloved magazine a couple of weeks ago...

... I was delighted to spot one of my tutorials - they'd been in touch about featuring it but I didn't think it'd made the final cut for the issue, so it was a very nice surprise to see it in print.
