A Year of Decluttering: Finished!

I finally finished my Less 365 decluttering project, hurrah!

The idea behind Less 365 is that you get rid of (give away, sell, recycle or throw away) one thing a day for a year, slowly but surely decluttering your space through the year. I started my second Less 365 project last summer and should have finished it this June but fell behind earlier this year. I decided to not worry too much about the dates and just keep going, hoping to eventually complete the full Less 365 no matter how many calendar days it took.

Since then I have cleared out...

... a dress that had slowly shrunk in the wash over the years because I couldn't be bothered to handwash it, four promotional totebags I was given at events but didn't like or need, three boring audiobooks, a dress that I gave to my sister after she borrowed it and looked approx a gazillion times better in it than me (I loved the print but it never really suited me), a few blanket squares that I'd knitted but which were never going to actually get turned into a blanket, a pack of pressed flowers I'd had for years and never used, a whole stack of promotional packaging materials for my now-closed DaWanda shop, a china dish I owned as a child which I no longer used and which I realised that I was no longer emotionally attached to (unlike the much treasured relics-from-my-childhood that make my heart burst with nostalgic sentiment when I look at them)...

... a pair of tights with a hole in them, an ugly egg cosy I'd made as a kid that was neither attractive, nor beloved nor useful, an old floppy disk drive (because what's the point of owning one of those when you no longer own any floppy disks), a broken bracelet I didn't like enough to fix, a couple of old photo albums (emptied of photos, as I did some editing of my photos this year and slimmed them down to just a few volumes), a cleaning product with a horrible chemical smell that I'd only used once, curtain wires and hooks bought to use in my old flat that were no longer needed, a roll of picture framing tape that I'd used to mend one old picture but had no more use for, a reference book about birds that I never actually referenced and twelve assorted bits of vintage crockery that were the least-loved pieces in my once-huge vintage collection...

... a gift bag I was never actually going to use for gifting, a big bag of tealights that were just gathering dust, some cookie cutters that were lovely but never ever used, a white blouse that was not so white anymore, two old swimming costumes well past their prime, a shawl that literally made me look like a crazy old lady when I wore it, a very bobbly old pair of gloves, a scarf in a colour that doesn't really suit me, two tote bags and a shopping bag that were looking worse for wear after years of use, a cake tin that I'd never used to bake a cake (when I bake I usually bake muffins or biscuits, I am bad at cakes), some boxes of fancy cutlery that was part of a set I'd inherited but which I knew I would never use (steak knives, etc), and a few more bits of vintage crockery...

... a "spare" whisk (I definitely do not use a whisk often enough to need a spare one) and a "spare" rolling pin (ditto), some tealight holders that were pretty but which I've never used, two trinket dishes that were empty of trinkets, an ugly tablecloth, a folding cake stand that I've used maybe once in a decade, some little empty spice jars I'd kept to put flowers in but never used, a commemorative coin without any sentimental or other special meaning for me, yet more bits of vintage crockery (I used to have a bit of a vintage crockery problem but am now trying to just keep the most beautiful, special pieces), some bunting I used to hang at the end of a bed I no longer own and a whole bunch of mugs and bowls (because I own waaaay more mugs and bowls than one person could possibly ever need)...

... a couple of old and very bobbly jumpers, a disposable tablecloth bought for a craft fair then kept in case I did another fair (which I now probably never will), two crumpled and unusable rolls of sticky back plastic, two bulky wooden coathangers, an ugly duvet cover and matching sheets, a vintage floral sheet that I never used because it was also pretty ugly, an assortment of mismatched cutlery from my student days, two slotted serving spoons (I never use slotted serving spoons, but they were part of a set so I'd kept them for years), a whole box of stuff I'd kept to craft with but which was actually just a box of random ugly junk, and two interiors books that were pretty but not filled with ideas I'd ever use in my own space...

... a damaged cross-stitched table cloth I'd bought cheap to craft with but not noticed how it was also badly stained, a stack of old photo negatives which I was never going to make prints from, some unfinished prototypes and samples stitched for crafty projects (which I cut up to salvage the materials, where possible), an old coin purse I never use, two of the many baking trays I accumulated during my baking-crazy years (because there is a physical limit to the number of baking trays you can use at once!), a pale grey jumper that I put on one day and thought "my goodness, this washes me out, why did I buy this??", seven brooches and some hairclips that I wore lots when I was a student but haven't worn since and a coffee-table book that looked a lot more interesting than it turned out to be...

... three jumpers and a pair of trousers from my student days which were well past their best (I was a student quite a long time ago!), a DVD box set of a boring sci-fi series that I am definitely never going to re-watch, a pale grey top (note to self: stop buying things that are pale grey, they look terrible on you!), three craft books I'd reviewed but was never going to make anything from, a tangle of old cables and a stack of manuals from bits of tech I no longer own, a DVD box set of a comedy series that didn't make me laugh, two dresses that I no longer wear, a cardigan that doesn't look good with anything I own, a necklace that was crazily knotted and wouldn't untangle, three more necklaces that I'd not worn for ten years and a ring I'd not worn in fifteen...

... a bracelet that never fitted me but which I'd kept because it was part of a set, a stack of stretchy beaded bracelets that fitted me when I was a teen but now cut into my wrist, several ugly old brown jumpers that I'd felted to use in a craft project but no longer needed, four badges I'd worn in my teens but never since, six odd socks (I have no idea where the other socks went to over the years but they are definitely now nowhere to be found and are not going to just magically reappear), a DVD box set of a TV show that was excellent but which I know I'm never gonna rewatch, a couple of books I'm not going to reread, an ugly coaster that I got free somewhere, a cheap sundress I bought when it was super hot this summer but which really doesn't suit me at all, a top and a dress that were too tight even when I bought them (so every time I put them on I thought "ugh" and wore something else), and a storage box that is now empty and un-needed thanks to all this decluttering!

Sorry, that was a pretty long list of stuff, wasn't it? As I'm sure you can imagine, it feels great to have cleared out all this stuff (and the things I cleared out earlier in the project) from my space and to have hit that target of decluttering 365 things, even if it did take 6 months longer than planned.

If you'd love to declutter your space in 2015 I highly recommend trying a Less 365 of your own - or picking another target number like 100 things to gradually work towards during the year. I'll be sharing some decluttering tips in a blog post soon!

P.S. If you're planning on blogging about your project, do so more frequently than I have so you don't bore everyone with a giant list of things you've cleared out, haha. Also remember to take some photos of the things you're decluttering as you go along so you don't have to rummage through the last couple of boxes you've got ready to take to the charity shop to find a few things to photograph :)

Less 365 Project Progress Report: Falling Behind

As you might guess from the title of this post, I've fallen behind with my decluttering project, Less 365.

I hit the halfway mark at the end of December so, if I'd managed to stick to my "declutter one thing a day, every day for a year" challenge I'd be nearly finished by now... but sadly, this is not the case. On my decluttering calendar I'm only up to 16th February, and in the real world it's nearly June already! Eeek.

So far this year I have decluttered...

Three almost-broken bracelets, a bangle I loved but haven't worn in at least a decade, two books of cartoons I haven't read for just as long, two now-empty storage boxes, a pair of heels which looked amaaaazing and were super comfy but (like all heels do) still made me fall over, a notebook that was so fancy I was too scared to actually write in it, a hardback copy of a book I owned in paperback, three exercise books I don't need, a cardigan that shed mohair fluff everwhere...

... a smart cardigan that I panic-bought to wear to a wedding but which turns out to be super itchy, two craft magazines I'd finished with, thirteen craft books I've reviewed but which I'm honestly never going to make anything from, twelve DVD box sets I'm not going to re-watch, a pile of fabric squares that never made it into my patchwork quilt (and which weren't nice enough to be worth keeping)...

... four pairs of shoes which I never wear because they don't actually fit me very well, a vintage plate I don't really love, and a pack of cute drawing pins which I don't need (because I own another identical pack and approximately a gazillion normal drawing pins, and only have one smallish pinboard!).

As always, some things have been gifted to friends and family, some sold on Ebay, some taken to the local charity shop and others thrown away or recycled.

This is my second year attempting a Less 365 Project (you can read about the first year here) and I knew it was going to be a challenge when I started, especially as (of course) the more stuff you declutter the harder it becomes to find things to clear out, and the harder those "yes, I definitely don't need this anymore!" decisions become.

I am very pleased that I have managed to clear these things (and the previous six months worth of decluttered bits and bobs) out from my space where they were sitting un-used, un-loved or no-longer-needed... but it's still a bit frustrating to have hit a wall like this.

The joy of self-set challenges though is that you made the rules, so you can change them! Hurrah! So, my Less 365 Project will be continuing... just a bit more slowly. Instead of feeling like I'm falling behind, or failing at my challenge, I'm just going to keep on going gradually until I've hit that "365 things" target.

I love how this challenge is helping me look long and hard at all my "stuff" (like lovely-but-uncomfortable shoes which are not magically going to become comfortable or magically turn back into the money I paid for them), to make long-overdue decisions like "do I finally mend this or get rid of it?" and to clear some space to better display and enjoy the things I'm keeping. A delightful side-effect of thinking a lot about decluttering is also that it's also helping curb my spending on buying new "stuff", which is great for my bank balance and saving me some more pennies to spend on wonderful Nice Days Out.

These are things that are worth doing, no matter how long the "challenge" takes!

I have no clue how long it will end up taking but eventually I will have cleared out all three hundred and sixty-five things from my space... and I'll let you know when I get there. Wish me luck! :)

Less 365 Project, Progress Report: Halfway!

In July last year I set myself the challenge of decluttering 365 things from my space - getting rid of one thing a day, every day for a whole year, aka the Less 365 Project #2. I reached the halfway mark (6 whole months of decluttering) at the end of December, woohoo!

In October, I cleared out...

...an art print I no longer like, 4 pairs of tights that had seen better days, 6 empty picture frames that I no longer need, 2 recipe books I don't cook from, 2 kids books that didn't make my "most beloved kids books I've decided to keep" list, an old jumper and cardigan that were getting very tatty, a vintage board game I bought to frame but never got round to doing so, an apron I bought for craft fairs that I no longer need, a stamp album I barely used as a kid, a bag I bought online that I loved in the photos but not when I actually came to use it, a formal dress I've worn once in 10 years and was never going to wear again because I never go to really formal things and even if I did my style has changed a lot in 10 years, a red belt I never wear, an old scarf that had gone horribly bobbly, an old hot water bottle that was well past its "replace by" date, a short sleeved cardigan that was gorgeous but which I never wore because I like cardigans with long sleeves, a trinket dish I no longer use, a vintage spoon that was just sitting in a drawer, a whole box full of old manuals and cables for printers, cameras and computers I no longer own, a pack of blank cassette tapes I'll never use, an empty jewellery box, 7 bits of jewellery I never wear, and an unwanted plant pot.

In November, I cleared out...

...a silk scarf I haven't worn since I was at University and really into wearing scarved with natty little jackets, a DVD I don't want to re-watch, a broken camera, 12 audiobooks I don't want to listen to again, 9 now-empty storage boxes, a bag with a damaged strap, a stained t-shirt, a pack of paper napkins I'm not going to use, a craft book I'd reviewed but didn't want to keep, a broken belt, 2 paper fans I don't need (I had 3 of these, for all those paper fan emergencies, I guess?) 3 old rolls of wallpaper I'd been keeping for crafting and never used, 2 huge shopping bags I don't need now I'm not taking huge piles of parcels to the Post Office any more, 9 books I don't want to re-read, a big bag of packing peanuts I thought would be useful but which I've never used, a stack of old mix-tapes I never listen to, a set of notecards I don't really like, 2 of my least-favourite teatowels from my vast stash, a vintage bedspread that was pretty but impractical, and an old textbook from a course at Uni which I'm never going to need to refer to.

And in December, I cleared out...

... another old Uni coursebook that I no longer need, some empty file folders, a mini stapler that I never use, a giant novelty paperclip, 15 empty picture frames I don't need, 2 DVDs I'm not going to rewatch, 9 unwanted Christmas ornaments, another craft book I've reviewed but didn't want to keep, 2 badges I never wear, 3 packs of Christmas cards that were so big they needed large letter stamps (not so great now I'm posting all my cards instead of hand delivering them to neighbours), 2 packs of pressed flowers I never used for crafting, some blank photocards leftover from a pack I bought years ago for sending my graduation photo to some relatives & have never needed since, a bookmark I don't use, another art print I no longer like, a spare Folksy ruler (lovely, but I don't need 2 of them!), 14 more non-beloved kids books, a box of old floppy disks, an unused stamp collecting kit from my childhood, a pack of plastic "crystals" I never used for crafting, a stack of old back-up CDs, a pack of themed wrapping paper that I'm never going to use and my old copy of Anna Karenina which I'm never going to reread.

Aaah, it feels so good to have cleared out all this stuff!

I have to admit that at the moment I feel a little "stuck" with this project, and am really not sure if I can possibly clear out another 6 months worth of things... but then I felt a bit like that at the end of 3 months, too, and look at those long lists of things I've since found I no longer needed/wanted! I am going to try and keep at it, and just see how it goes.

Less 365 Project Progress Report: Three Months of Decluttering

Back at the start of July I decided that I needed to do some decluttering and set myself the challenge of doing a second Less 365 Project - getting rid of one thing a day, every day for a whole year.

I found the first year a bit of a challenge so I really wasn't sure if I was going to manage this second attempt... but I've just finished the first three months and have cleared out loads of stuff! Just nine more months to go, haha :)

I've not actually been picking one item a day, but I've been decluttering in little bursts here and there and keeping a list of the stuff I've been clearing out so I can track my progress. I keep thinking "oh my goodness, I cannot possibly get rid of any more things!" but then all of a sudden I realise that actually I'm never going to read that book and this top no longer fits and I no longer like that band... and a few more things get added to the list.

I still have no idea if I'm going to manage the full 365 things but having that as a target is really helping me focus and be honest about the stuff I do and don't need, and to cherrypick the stuff I love from the stuff I've just kept for the sake of it.

In July I cleared out...

... some badges that I must have stored somewhere damp because they'd gone rusty, a broken pair of headphones, a mini suitcase my sister swore used to belong to her, a vintage cup that was pretty but also pretty useless, an old pen pot I don't use, a skirt I no longer wear, two worn out tote bags, a blanket with lots of holes in it, a t-shirt that shrank in the wash, several boxes of old paperwork, two empty storage boxes, a garden ornament that I don't have a garden for, a tablecloth I don't use, a vintage dress that never suited me, a broken clock, some kids books I don't feel sentimental about any more, some vintage embroidery I was going to sew something with and never did, a cross stitch picture I never got round to framing, two teatowels that were falling apart, a book I'm not going to re-read, a pair of trainers that no longer fit, a book I'm never going to read (and can get from the library easily if I change my mind), two ornaments I no longer like, a mechanical whisk which I've never used, a broken kitchen timer, and two DVD box sets of TV shows I don't want to rewatch.

In August I cleared out...

... a damaged purse, some mis-matched cutlery, another DVD box set I don't want to rewatch, a t-shirt that was totally the wrong colour for me, a shirt that was too small for me, an old t-shirt I used to use when I dyed my hair, badges from my days doing Brownies and gymnastics as a kid, a damaged old bag, a brooch with a broken clasp, three broken necklaces I didn't like enough to mend, a pair of shoes with a hole in them, a craft book I'm not going to make anything from, my least favoruite badges from my childhood collection, a plant pot I never really liked, an ugly craft project I made as a kid, a book I'm not going to reread, two serving dishes that I've never used, two storage boxes and a tin I no longer need, an ugly keyring, an old t-shirt, a bag I no longer use, some zines I'm not going to re-read, some magazines ditto, a teatowel I don't use, and a print I don't love any more (and I don't have enough wall space for the ones I do love!).

And in September I cleared out...

.... two recipe books I never cooked anything from, two kids encyclopedias and a picture book I no longer love, a book of comics I don't want to reread, a boring craft book I don't want to make anything from, an interiors book in a style I no longer really like, a letter rack I don't use, a battered pencil tin I used at school but haven't since, a DIY manual I'm never going to use, a box of Christmas baubles and some other decorations that were my least favourite in an over-flowing box of Christmas stuff, a box of board games I've never played, a slightly ugly vase, some coffee cups and a serving dish I don't use, three storage boxes and a tin I no longer need, a necklace I bought ten years ago and never wore, a bracelet ditto, a necklace I wore a lot when I was a student but haven't worn since, two records I can't play because I don't own a record player, three CDs I never listen to, a book of poetry I don't want to reread and a slightly battered old bookmark.

Seriously, how did I have all this stuff just hanging about in my house???

Here's to the next three months!

Less 365

Last Christmas I set myself a challenge to give away 100 things in the run up to Christmas, to counterbalance all the consumption and excess of the season.

I had to find one thing in my house each day which I no longer used / liked / needed and then give it away (to local charity shops or to friends and neighbours). The giving felt great, but the decluttering felt even better! I was totally amazed by how many random things I'd been keeping that I no longer had any use for or real interest in (including the cookie cutters pictured above, which I'd bought many years before and never used).

As I wrote last year, "I will never ever ever be a minimalist. I like having a house full of colour and pattern and vintage treasures and sentimental trinkets and family heirlooms and things which just make me happy because they're beautiful. But I do want my posessions to earn their place in my home, and to have a house filled with wonderful things rather than clutter."

So, without blogging about it (because, honestly, I didn't know if I'd be able to manage it, especially after having just cleared out 100 things) I set myself the challenge in 2011 to do a "Less 365" project, getting rid of one thing a day for a whole year... and I just completed it yesterday afternoon!

I put a box in the spare room and started adding things to it one by one. I didn't completely stick to the "one thing a day" rule, but I kept a list of everything as I went along so I could keep track of my progress and so it wouldn't matter so much if I missed a few days here and there, I just made them up later. Sometimes my "one thing" for the day included lots of individual things (like a big pile of old magazines, or a china coffee set), sometimes they were big things, sometimes small, but the list just kept on getting longer...

Some things went to the charity shop, some things to friends and neighbours, others got recycled or just thrown away if they were really old or damaged. I could probably have sold lots of stuff on Ebay but to be honest selling on Ebay makes me really stressed, and I wanted that warm fuzzy feeling you get from taking bags of nice things to the local charity shop more than I wanted a bit of extra cash.

It's remarkably easy to pick out just one book you're not going to read again, one CD you never listen to, one sweater you never wear, your least favourite bit of crockery, and so on... and I've found that by sticking everything in a box out of sight for a few weeks, decision-making is a lot less stressful. Putting stuff in the box doesn't feel scary and final, when you empty the box when it gets full you'll probably have emotionally let go of most of the contents... and if you haven't you get a second chance to rescue something at the last minute if you've changed your mind, or you can just leave things in the box for a few months while you make a final decision.

I'm not going to lie to you, it does get trickier to choose things as the year goes on, but it makes you really look hard at all your "stuff" and be really honest with yourself about what you want to keep and use/display in your home, and why... and, of course, your space will be much less cluttered. I hugely recommend it! And even if you don't fancy the full "Less 365", you could just try it for January and see how you get on :)
