Red, White & Turquoise

These are a couple of custom flower brooches I made last month - now safely delivered to a happy customer.

I usually make these in lilac and purple with a turquoise button in the centre... they look so different in the custom colours!

I've written before about the joys of custom orders but honestly it's just so much fun re-working things in custom colours, especially when you know they're destined for a special occasion :)

Not quite a Black Swan...

... but a grey one!

I made this custom version of my swan mask design as a special order for a customer this week.

If you ever want one of my designs in a custom colour, do get in touch! :)

Big Bows, Little Bows

This lovely lot went in the post today - a custom order of lots of felt bows:

The big ones are headbands and the mini ones are super cute hair ties.

I especially adore that bright neon pink... but my goodness it's a pig to photograph!

If you fancy a bow of your own, the headbands are available in turquoise and yellow from my shops and there's one turquoise and one neon pink bow brooch left in the clearance section of my Etsy shop.

Wedding Flowers

Another kind of show and tell today, this time featuring a batch of felt flowers I made as a custom order for a wedding earlier this year.

I was thrilled to get a follow-up email from the buyer this week, with lots of gorgeous photos from the wedding...

Seeing these pics really made me smile, the wedding looks so lovely and I'm so delighted that my work played a part in such a great occasion. Honestly it makes me want to develop a whole wedding range!

Custom Colours

This week I've mostly been doing admin, which is very dull and makes for rubbish photographs! So, here's one I made earlier... work-in-progress pics of a custom abstract mobile I made recently.

The colours selected:

The finished mobile pieces, ready to be sewn onto narrow burgundy ribbons for hanging:

It's always great fun working on these, and it's always inspiring working with colour combos I wouldn't normally use (I'm especially loving the combination of purple and mint green).

Spring Rainbow

I've just got a quick picture to share today - some pretty flower brooches I made this spring as custom order:

The flower design was based on a business logo. I don't take on much custom design work, but this was a really fun project - I especially enjoyed choosing out all those colour combos!

Abstract circles

Gosh I've been such a lazy blogger this week. Many apologies :)

Normal service will be resumed shortly but in the meantime here's a quick snap of what I've been working on this week - lots of abstract circles for a custom mobile. Love all those yummy colours!

Custom Birdies

I've been sewing lots of bird brooches this weekend, including a special set for a customer who wanted them facing in the other direction:
I'm also making some bird ornaments like this set I made last year:I hope to have the ornaments in my shops soon, but if you'd like to pre-order one please do get in touch!

Sleepy Sunday

Oh, I have so many things to blog about! I've also got a whole handful of fun tutorials on my to do list that I'm itching to share with you guys.

But I'm afraid they'll have to wait for the moment because today is turning into one long nap. Sooo... sleeeepy...

I have managed a teeny bit of sewing, finishing a custom large poppy brooch with lots of extra beads:But apart from that... well... *yawn*.... zzzz....

The Joys of Custom Orders

I don't do much custom design work these days, but I love making things in custom colours. I have my own favourites that I probably return to far too often, and working with other peoples choices help me look at my pieces afresh and can help spark new ideas too.

Just recently finished - custom poppy bracelets, in soft blues and greens, ready to go in the post tomorrow:The colours are lovely, especially against the white - it looks so light and pretty, perfect for weddings or summer parties. I'm actually sort of embarrassed at never having thought of using a white background before!

I was so pleased with how they turned out that I couldn't resist making a couple more, in one of my current fave colours, ready to be added to my shop this week:

Deer Oh Deer

I'm still in a Christmas-crafting mood (I blame the cold weather we've had lately), working on lots of cute little reindeer including one special custom order in white and purple:

Show and Tell (C365/361)

Lots of lovely pictures to show you today! First up, here's the product of last night's sewing session:
Sprigs of mistletoe! It's lovely to be making these again this year, and it's always interesting to revisit old designs. This year's are sewn onto thicker red felt to make them a bit more sturdy and I've decided that I rather like the bolder, more solid shape made by leaving the middle bit of red as it is. Of course I only worked this out when I'd cut out the first one and had it side by side with the others for comparison! Ah well. I may list both options and let the customers decide which is best!

Next up: some shots of a few special items I've been working on recently...

I got a fun custom order this month to make an embroidered teabag - the reverse is embroidered with details of the occasion & the reverse of the tag (rather obviously) says "tea". A simple but very sweet idea for a gift I think!
I also finished some long-delayed gifts made as a "thankyou" to the girls who did some felt modelling for me back at the start of the summer... some sets of hairclips...

... and a couple of snowy owl brooches:
Here's a peek at some of the owl sketches I've been doing since making that last brooch (I'm plotting a whole little series of owls for my shop) - this was pinned to our noticeboard today by my boyfriend who was slightly annoyed and greatly amused at how I'd scribbled all over his to do list in my owl-sketching frenzy: "typical!"

Special Requests (C365/355)

Yesterday I finished all the teacups from the day before, then drank a celebratory cup of tea and settled down to work on some custom orders... I've had a sudden flurry of them recently, and they're proving a nice bit of variation from batch-sewing. Last night I worked on a special fawn-coloured version of my squirrel pins ...
... and a pincushion version of my forget-me-nots brooches:
I made a bit of a mess of the kitchen table in the process!

Christmas in July?

Yesterday I got a rush-job custom order for some ivory poppy bracelets, so starting those was top priority last night...
... but as you can see, I also started a couple of other things too! The bracelets turned out really nice (and got posted in such a rush that I didn't even get a chance to take a picture of them, oops), a much softer look than my white poppies. As for the other stuff... the pink and yellow is the start of a new pincushion design that I've been wanting to try for just ages (no prizes for guessing what it will be!) and the ginger is my first bit of Christmas sewing.

- Well, technically I think the robins were the first bit (see them here and their original sketches here, from many months earlier) but shhh no-one will know -

Again, no prizes for guessing what the gingerbread-coloured felt is meant to be! It does feel a bit weird working on Christmas in July (especially during a heatwave) but I did feel very underprepared for the "holiday season" last year and I think I only started to get ideas for Christmas-themed items at the end of November. I'd like to have a nice little "collection" of designs ready for this year, stuff that looks nice together and will be deserving of its own little section in my shop come wintertime. As with many (most? of my schemes, this may well never happen but hopefully I will be a little more prepared than last time round!

Being Busy (365, day 279)

Yesterday I finished a whole bundle of things...
A custom pale pink poppy brooch, a custom Lily of the Valley ornament (I love making special ornament versions of my brooch designs), an assortment of poppy bracelets, and two new masks: a white rabbit (with seriously lopsided ears) and a brown bear. I also made my first flower necklace but foolishly omitted it from that picture. I went to take a quick snap of it to put up on this blog, and DOOM! my camera had died again!! Argh. So far giving it a good whack has not fixed it. Not good :(

I suspect I will be buying a new camera next week, even if it does spring back to life. I have so many new things I want to photograph and list, these delays are just too annoying. Luckily, I did manage to get some fab shots this morning of my masks and hairbands being modelled out in the sunshine. Ooh, that reminds me, I still need to edit those... better go do that really... (I also might try whacking the camera again, you never know, it might work, right?)

365 / 196 - A Gigantic Cherry Blossom

After a bit of a crazy-busy week, I finally got a chance to curl up on the sofa yesterday and have a lovely relaxing few hours dedicated to my sewing. Mostly this week's craftiness has been done "just before" or "just between" or "during", squeezed into my day in a most unrelaxing way! This only served to make yesterday's dedicated crafty time seem even more delicious...

I have been working on odds and ends of works in progress all week, cutting out lots of bits and pieces and starting this and sewing a bit of that, lots of useful but unsatisfying chores. Yesterday the "in progress" pile was progressed a little further, but my main task for the afternoon was to make a double-sized cherry blossom for a custom order. I had been a little worried about scaling up my pattern, but it turned out okay in the end and served to remind me just how enjoyable the cherry blossoms are to sew. Here's the custom blossom with the regular-sized one for comparison...... and a great customer appreciation photo starring the regular blossom:
(The delicious-looking scarf is from one of my fellow UK-based Etsy sellers, Shunklies.)

I am about to run out of the beads I use for the cherry blossoms, and trying to acquire some new ones I ended up going on a little bit of a seed bead buying spree. I really do enjoy making all my beaded flowers, so I thought I should stock up a little and think up some new designs to try out. The sensible thing would probably have been to think up the designs before buying the beads to use in them, but I was shopping for brooch backs anyway and got a bit carried away. Ah well. Thinking of supplies, I got a huge order of felt today (33 colours! very exciting). It's currently sitting in my lounge in a big pile as I've not really got anywhere to put it... and I'm already thinking about ordering some more, haha. It's genuinely going to start taking over the house soon, tumbling out of cupboards on top of people, etc.

In other news, my pincushions got a nice mention on this blog (such sweet comments too!) and my badger brooch showed up on the "trends" board on Dawanda in their list of "products with the most fans"over on the right there: I'm just starting to get a feel for how Dawanda works, so for all I know that could be a super-common occurrence, but it made me smile regardless!

365 / 60 & 61 - finished pastels, a secret treat, and lovely post

On Friday (day 60) I finished the pastel mobile I've been working on. Here are lots of lovely pastel photos:
It's very interesting (to me at any rate) to see the familiar mobile shapes in unfamiliar, softer colours. Sewing the finished discs onto the ribbons was a different process to normal, too, as they were single-sided (it's to be a wall-hanging) so the back looks like this:

Yesterday (Saturday, day 61) saw the arrival of some Etsy post (photos coming soon) and my secret swap package from the lovely Ally of AughrasLair... THE most gorgeous tote bag (great colours, great fabrics, I love owls, I use a tote bag most days) and a cute matching plushie:
I am just in love with that bag and cannot wait to show it off to everyone. Its arrival also prompted me to finally make the swap item I will be sending out... and because it is a SECRET there will be no photo until it has arrived at its destination.

I should have made it last week or even the week before that but I've rather been letting things drop while I've been unwell and working out the pattern etc for this item actually took a bit of brainpower (shapes to be drawn! colours to be chosen! decisions to be made! etc). It's 95% finished though and just in time for the end of the postal strike, hurrah! Just the last few finishing touches to add and some nice wrapping to attend to and we'll be sorted. Naturally as with all these things I have a few improvements I would like to go back in time and suggest to myself (darker thread there, perhaps? this colour instead of that, maybe?) but overall I am pleased with how it's turned out and I'm also very pleased that it looks how I imagined it in my head (sometimes this really does not happen). Fingers crossed that my swapee likes it too!

Crafting 365 / 54 - a new mobile

Yesterday I made a start on the custom mobile I mentioned... I made a big mess of the kitchen table, spreading out the chosen pastel felt colours and cutting them all into pieces. The discs for this mobile are to be one-sided only (it will be flat on a wall, not hanging centrally and spinning) and it was interesting to break from my normal process of cutting two of every piece. It's also very interesting making something to someone else's colours and seeing how different the pieces look in this softer palette.
I managed to sew a few of the discs together before I went to bed, but there are still lots to do! I also managed to get a small batch of cloud brooches finished and relisted, though I wasn't totally awake and managed to sew one of the clouds on the wrong way round! Very annoying. I shall probably list it as a slightly discounted oops or something, there's nothing technically wrong with it... it just doesn't look quite right to me & it certainly looks different to the photos in my listing! Ah well. Must pay more attention next time! Here are the clouds nestling amongst the pastel discs - I think the grey looks quite nice next to the pastel colours...
I also did a little bit of dull work on my accounts last night, which is why my crafting 365 photo contains a calculator (resting on my snazzy accounts book - it's only snazzy on the outside, believe me!). Nothing too interesting/important, just adding up a few expenses from last month in an attempt to keep up with my paperwork!

Crafting 365 / 37 & 38 - birds!

Bit busy yesterday so no time for the old blogging. Two days of craftiness have passed and thus here are two photos:As you may be able to gather, I have been making fat little bird ornaments. These are bigger versions of an old pattern - you can see the old & new patterns in the first picture. Hurrah for birds! Also late last night I started knitting little hats for the Big Knit. They are the perfect "it's late at night and I am half-asleep" crafty project, although sewing them together takes a bit more concentration!

In other news, I got very excellent tea-themed post yesterday. Here it is:
A lovely print from theblackapple and the gorgeous teapot brooch I ordered from seaurchin (she also sent a little freebie heart pin and an "emergency" teabag, brilliant!). The brooch is even more beautiful in real life than in pictures, it almost made me cry when I first saw it. I shall be wearing it pretty much constantly this winter I think. The print is the second piece of art I have bought from Etsy - I also treated myself to a print from atwhim which is now available as delicious postcards. I have my eye on a few more bits of art but I shall have to restrain myself and build up my collection slowly or I shall be bankrupt before you can say "gosh what a nice picture of an owl/tree/teacup"

I have also been sent another moustache-in-action photo, this time from the lovely Brooke of gemmafactrix (another one of my wonderful volunteer moustache models). She even sweetly blogged about it here. I really love seeing these photos, they are just so much fun.

Oh, and I managed to get some photos taken of my giant mobile all stretched out - I had to move the kitchen table over to the windowsill to get anywhere near enough light, and I was perched rather precariously on a chair but I got there in the end...

Crafting 365 / 33 - sewing round in circles

Yesterday I did quite a bit of work on my current custom project - I cut out the very last of the 320 pieces of felt I needed (yes, really, 320) and started to sew them together. By close of play I'd managed this lot...
... that's 120 of the pieces sewn together, only 200 left to go! They are quite the perfect occupation for sleepy afternoons and evenings (and I do have a lot of those).

I was rather stupid though and forgot to check if I had any black thread left - with boxes and boxes of thread in various colours I get to assume that the colour I want will be there, and then I get in trouble when it isn't. Of course I noticed the absence of black thread only after the shops had closed! Luckily it was black thread I needed so I begged/borrowed/stole some from my lovely neighbour and had a productive evening of stitching merrily but gosh I did feel daft.
