Spooky Stuff: A Halloween Embroidery Pattern

Spookiness is for life, not just for Halloween!!

Also... I might have promised to share this pattern back in the autumn... then got overwhelmed and not finished it until now... and then felt guilty about waiting for another autumn to roll around until I shared it.

SO: here you go, one cute and spooky embroidery pattern full of fun details to stitch however you fancy (and in whatever month of the year you want to!).

This design would also make a fab colouring sheet!

My Spooky Stuff embroidery pattern is now available as part of my Patreon pattern library.

Subscribers get full access to a growing library of PDF patterns and tutorials, and emails whenever new projects are added. You can unsubscribe at any time.

Magical Stars Embroidery Patterns

After sharing a super-detailed free Halloween embroidery pattern last week, here's another simpler pattern for you!

Like last week's design, this was inspired by my favourite line from the classic Halloween film Hocus Pocus.

This starry pattern was the first idea I sketched when I first started thinking about a Hocus Pocus -themed pattern. I ended up going in a different direction but couldn't let go of this idea... so I thought why not share this one too? The more patterns the merrier, right??

This starry design will fit neatly in 6 inch embroidery hoop, and would be great to stitch with backstitch and French knots.

You could stitch the stars in white on a dark background to create a night sky effect, or use bright colours for a magic spell vibe.

You'll find a free version of this pattern at the bottom of this post, but I've also shared a hi-res PDF version over on my Patreon... and I've shared another starry embroidery pattern with my Patreon subscribers, too!

This customisable pattern is exclusive to my Patreon subscribers.

It has a border of stars and dots, with a blank space in the centre for you to add a quotation you love or any other text you fancy. So many possibilities!

Subscribe for a small monthly fee and you'll get access to a growing library of PDF patterns and tutorials, with an email whenever I add a new project. You can cancel any time.

A hi-res PDF version of this pattern is also available in my Patreon pattern library, along with the starry border pattern.

This pattern is for non commercial use only: you can use it to stitch as many  as you want for yourself or as gifts, but please don't make any for sale. Thanks xx

Amok! Amok! Amok! A Hocus Pocus Embroidery Pattern for Halloween

I've got a free, spooky embroidery pattern to share with you guys today - a celebration of one of my favourite films, and all things witchy!

With the nights drawing in, my thoughts have turned to the books and films I want to revisit on chilly autumn evenings.

Top of my Must Watch Halloween Movies list is the kids classic "Hocus Pocus" - starring Kathy Najimy, Bette Midler, and Sarah Jessica Parker as witches brought back to life by some hapless teens.

My absolute favourite moment from the film is when SJP's dim, giddy character gleefully shouts "Amok! Amok! Amok!" ... so obviously I had to stitch an homage to that moment.

I started out wanting to design something simple, focusing on the text itself, then got a bit carried away drawing cute and spooky witchcraft-themed things! More is more, right???

The finished pattern fits nicely in a 7 inch embroidery hoop, or you can trace individual motifs for some quick Halloween stitching.

I think this would also make a great Halloween colouring page, maybe even to colour in during a Hocus Pocus rewatch?

Easy Halloween Embroidery Pattern: Sew a Cute Candy Corn!

Fancy a quick and easy bit of Halloween crafting? You've come to the right place! :)

Today I'm sharing a free embroidery pattern for a cute and happy little candy corn:

Candy corn are small American sweets, associated with the autumn harvest and often eaten at Halloween. I stitched some felt versions a few years ago and couldn't resist trying out an embroidered version (you guys know how much I love a project variation!).

This little guy is quick and easy to stitch, and fits into a 4 inch embroidery hoop for stitching (or displaying in the hoop when you've finished).

The candy corn is stitched in white, orange, and yellow (to match the colours of the sweets). I ummed and ahhed about whether to do the top two horizontal lines in white and orange, or in orange and yellow - maybe you'd like to stitch yours differently!

I used backstitch and three strands from six-stranded embroidery thread (floss) to sew most of the pattern, but you might want to use more strands and/or a different stitch for a bolder candy corn. I then added two chunky French knots for the eyes, but if you cannot bear stitching French knots white seed beads would work just as well.

This little guy would look super cute sewn onto all kinds of textile projects - from coin purses to coasters to t-shirt pockets. You could also make little embroidered felt ornaments by stitching him onto a dark felt background. I like to use tissue paper patterns when I'm embroidering on felt (click here for an example!).

Want to sew some of my original felt candy corn? You'll find tutorials for the cute candy corn ornaments and more in this round-up of some of the Halloween projects available on my blog.

This pattern is for non commercial use only: you can use it to stitch as many candy corn as you want for yourself or as gifts, but please don't make any for sale. You may borrow the photo if you want to blog about this project, but remember to credit me and link back to this page on my blog, and do not reproduce my entire post or share my pattern on your site. Thanks!

Sew a Felt Bird Mask for Halloween

I've started a Patreon page!

Patreon is a bit like a blog, but you can set different membership levels and offer subscriber-only content to people who are interested in your work. My plan for my page is to gradually build up a pattern library, turning all the crafty projects on my blog into easy-to-print PDF files with hi-res templates / easily printable patterns.

Subscribers will get access to all the PDFs I've added to the library so far, and be notified by email when I add new ones.

It's going to take me a good while to work through my whole archive, but I'll also be adding PDF versions of all the new patterns/templates I share here on my blog over the coming months.

I'll also be posting some of my old newsletter projects exclusively for my Patreon subscribers... starting with a whole bunch of fun felt masks to sew for Halloween :)

First up: a tutorial for sewing a felt bird mask!

This was the first felt mask I made back in the early days of my online shop - look how young and fresh-faced I look in that photo!!! How time flies when you're busy sewing stuff from felt!

Spider Web: Halloween Embroidery Pattern

Autumn is just around the corner so, of course, I'm thinking about Halloween craft projects!

The first slightly spooky project I want to share with you guys this season is a pattern for stitching a spiderweb:

An embroidered spider web would be a great addition to your Halloween decor, or your year-round look if you like a gothic, witchy vibe!

Stitched on felt and framed in a hoop like this, the web would make a great display for an enamel pin collection with a Halloween / witchcraft / Harry Potter theme.

If you print it at 100% this pattern will fit nicely inside a 6 inch embroidery hoop when finished. For an added gothic touch, you could paint the hoop black!

I used a 7 inch hoop when stitching, sewing the whole pattern with backstitch and three strands of white embroidery thread (floss). I stitched my web on dark grey felt, using tissue paper as shown in this tutorial.

If you’re framing the finished piece in an embroidery hoop, you may wish to add an extra stitch to the ends of the 7 radiating lines to make the design easier to frame without any gaps around the edges.

You'll find the spider web embroidery pattern over on my Patreon.

This post is sponsored by Cloud Craft, who sell 100% wool felt and lots of other supplies for hand stitching projects: fabric, thread, embroidery hoops and tools, buttons and trims, sewing kits, and more!

https://www.cloudcraft.co.uk/

I love Cloud Craft's wool felt, it's great quality, holds stitches really well and doesn't stretch out of shape like some less sturdy synthetic felts or blends. It also meets European Toy Standards and carries the Oeko-Tex ‘confidence in textiles’ mark, so contains no nasty chemicals. You can pick the perfect felt colours for your project or get inspired by their lovely colour collections.

https://www.cloudcraft.co.uk/

I stitched the owl mask in this tutorial using 100% wool felt and other materials from Cloud Craft - follow the links to find each product in their shop!

You will need:

The templates provided at the bottom of this post
Dark brown felt - I used a 20 x 30 cm sheet of Walnut Whip
Black felt - I used a 20 x 20 cm sheet of Dog's Nose
Black and dark brown sewing thread
1 metre black ribbon (or a length of black elastic, if you prefer)
Light brown embroidery thread (floss) - I used DMC stranded cotton shade 3864
Sewing needles and pins
Sewing scissors

To make the owl mask:

1. Use the templates provided to cut out the following felt pieces: 2 x brown masks, 1 x brown feathers, and 2 x black beaks.

2. Place the feathers shape on one of the mask pieces as shown and pin it in place. Sew the feathers in position with whip stitch and matching sewing thread, sewing only the inside sections (the outside edge of the mask will be sewn later).

3. Time to start decorating the mask! For all the stitched decoration use half strands of light brown embroidery thread (so, for 6 stranded thread just use 3 strands). Begin by sewing along the edges of the feathers, sewing a line of backstitch flush with the edge of the felt to make the feathers stand out clearly.

4. Sew a series of radiating single stitches around each eye hole, as shown. Use the photo as a rough guide and try to sew the same number of stitches per eye.

5. Finish the decoration by filling in the top section of the mask with random single stitches, working from the bottom upwards to fill the space.

6. Cut two 50cm lengths of black ribbon. Position one ribbon end on the undecorated mask shape so it overlaps slightly above the eye hole, as pictured. Pin or hold the ribbon in place and sew it to the felt with whip stitch and brown sewing thread - take care to sew into the felt but not through it. Cut the unattached end of the ribbon at an angle to help prevent fraying.

Repeat to sew the other ribbon piece on the other side of the mask.

If you'd like to use a loop of elastic instead of ribbon ties, sew one end of a piece of elastic to the mask, trim the elastic to the size required and sew the other end to the other side of the mask.

7. Place the front and back mask pieces together, so the ribbon ends are sandwiched between them. Pin or hold the layers together and sew around eye holes. Use whip stitch and matching sewing thread, starting and finishing your stitching between the layers to keep the outside of the mask neat.

8. Sew around the outside of the mask with more whip stitches, sewing the layers together and sewing through the ribbon (or elastic) as you pass it.

9. Place the two beak pieces on top of each other and sew them together with whip stitch. Use a long piece of black sewing thread, starting your stitching in the centre of the curved edge. Hide the knot between the two layers, sew around the beak but don't finish your stitching / trim the thread yet!

10. Fold the beak in half along its length and line it up with the curve of the mask, as pictured. Using the same thread as before, sew the top edge of the beak to the mask with whip stitches. Sew out from the centre to one side of the beak and back again, then out to the other side and back so the beak is held in place securely.

Congrats - you've now got a finished owl mask, ready for lots of Halloween fun!
