Sew Some Felt Fruit! Apple and Orange Slices Tutorial

Today I'm sharing a free tutorial for sewing some faux fruit slices: felt orange slices and felt apple slices!

This is part of a series of fruity tutorials. You'll find the apple and pear tutorial here, and I'll be posting the other projects in the coming weeks.

The apple and orange slices would look fab strung together to make a fun fruity garland or necklace, or you could make all the different fruit and display them in a bowl to add a pop of quirkiness and colour to your decor. Please note that the finished felt fruit is intended for decorative use only - it is not a toy and should be kept well out of reach of young children.

This project was originally published in docrafts Creativity magazine and stitched using felt from their Craft Planet range.

You will need:

The template sheet provided (see the bottom of this post)
White, orange, dark brown and red/green felt
Matching sewing threads
Toy stuffing
Sewing needles and pins
Sewing scissors

To sew the fruit slices:

1. For each slice of fruit, cut 1 x peel, 2 x slices and either 6 orange segments or (freehand) 3 small teardrop shaped pips.

2. Sew the orange segments or brown apple pips to the white slices, using whip stitch and matching threads.

3. Sew the slices together along the straight edge, with whip stitch and white thread.

4. Attach the peel, using thread to match the peel. Sew carefully so the coloured felt shows along the top of the white felt. Sew along one side and halfway along the other.

5. Stuff the fruit with toy stuffing, adding small pieces of stuffing at a time to stuff the shape evenly.

6. Sew up the gap with more whip stitches and finish your stitching neatly.

This tutorial is for personal use only: you can use it to stitch as many pieces of fruit as you want for yourself or as gifts, but please don't make any for sale. You may borrow a photo or two if you want to blog about this project, but remember to credit me and link back to the original source, and do not reproduce my entire post or share the pattern itself on your site. Thanks!

Thanks guys!

Linda - I'm afraid these haven't been designed as toys, so might not be safe to give to kids to play with. I'd definitely recommend keeping these for decorative use only.
