Time for the final project in my felt fruit series: sewing some kiwi fruit halves!

I hope you guys have enjoyed this series - do let me know if you make any felt fruit to decorate your homes! The individual felt projects would look cute sitting on a bookshelf, and if you made all the fruit they'd look fantastic displayed together in a bowl.

Follow the links to find the tutorials for the earlier projects: apples and pear, orange and apple slices, strawberries and watermelon slices.

Please note that the finished felt fruit is intended for decorative use only - it is not a toy and should be kept well out of reach of young children.

Time for the penultimate tutorial in my felt fruit series: how to sew slices of watermelon.

 felt watermelon slices

A faux watermelon slice would look fun propped up against a bookshelf, or you could add a ribbon loop and hang it as a quirky ornament or sew on a brooch clasp and wear it as a giant fruity brooch.

Or why not make the whole set of felt fruit and display them in a bowl? I've already shared tutorials for sewing the apples and pear, the orange and apple slices and the strawberries. I'll post the kiwi tutorial sometime soon.

Please note that the finished felt fruit is intended for decorative use only - it is not a toy and should be kept well out of reach of young children.

Sew Some Felt Fruit! Strawberries Tutorial

The third project in my series of free felt fruit sewing tutorials is...strawberries!

felt strawberries

One strawberry would look cute as a key chain or hung from a cord as a necklace, and several strawberries in a little bowl would add a pop of colour and cuteness to your decor.

 felt strawberries

Or, you could follow all my tutorials to make a whole bowl of felt fruit. I've already shared tutorials for sewing the apples and pear, and the orange and apple slices. I'll be posting the remaining projects in the coming weeks.

Please note that the finished felt fruit is intended for decorative use only - it is not a toy and should be kept well out of reach of young children.

You will need:

The template sheet provided (see the bottom of this post)
Red and green felt
Matching sewing thread
Yellow embroidery thread
Toy stuffing
Sewing needles and pins
Sewing scissors

To sew the strawberries (large or small):

1. For each strawberry, cut out 3 x strawberry pieces and 1 x strawberry leaf.

2. Use yellow embroidery thread to stitch some "pips" on each of the strawberry pieces.

3. Sew the strawberry pieces together with right sides facing each other, leaving a gap as you sew up the final edge.

4. Turn the strawberry the right way out, stuff it then sew up the gap.

5. Add the leaf to the top with a few stitches of green thread, lining up the points of the leaf with the corners of the strawberry as pictured.

This tutorial is for personal use only: you can use it to stitch as many pieces of fruit as you want for yourself or as gifts, but please don't make any for sale. You may borrow a photo or two if you want to blog about this project, but remember to credit me and link back to the original source, and do not reproduce my entire post or share the pattern itself on your site. This is part of a series of fruity tutorials. You'll find the apple and pear tutorial here, and I'll be posting the other projects in the coming weeks.

The apple and orange slices would look fab strung together to make a fun fruity garland or necklace, or you could make all the different fruit and display them in a bowl to add a pop of quirkiness and colour to your decor. Please note that the finished felt fruit is intended for decorative use only - it is not a toy and should be kept well out of reach of young children.

Sew some Felt Fruit! Apple and Pear Tutorial

UPDATE: this tutorial is now available in my Patreon pattern library.

-------

Sometimes it's nice to make things which are useful and practical... and sometimes it's nice to make decorative, whimsical things. Today I'm starting a tutorial series which is definitely the latter: sewing some felt fruit!

 Felt apples and pear

I'm sharing how to make a felt apple and pear today, and over the coming weeks I'll be posting free tutorials for making the rest of this colourful felt fruit.

 felt fruit

You can make the whole set (wouldn't they look fab as a mobile or displayed in a bowl together?) or make individual pieces to decorate your space. If you did want to make something practical, the apple and pear would make great pincushions. Please note that the finished felt fruit is intended for decorative use only - it is not a toy and should be kept well out of reach of young children.

Felt Fruit! Felt Ice Lollies! Felt Houses!

The current issue of docrafts Creativity magazine (#61) includes two felt-y projects designed by me...

There's a whole assortment of felt fruit...

... and phone cases decorated with felt ice lollies / ice creams!

I was chuffed to see they both made the magazine's contents page...

... and I was delighted to see the fruit popping up in promos for this month's issue on the docrafts Facebook page and the docrafts homepage.

https://www.facebook.com/docrafts
http://www.docrafts.com/

These two projects were both fun to work on but the felt fruit was an especially enjoyable challenge. Making 3D shapes from flat pieces of felt can be tricky! And when you're making felt versions of real things that actually exist in the real world, the shapes have to be just right.

Unexpectedly, the kiwi fruit turned out to be trickiest to get right (I was totally expecting it to be the pear). One prototype was too round. One was too long. Then the third was just right. Phew! I did a highly embarrasing victory dance round the house when I'd finished that pattern.

After all that, I think the kiwi ended up being my favourite :)

Luckily for you, you don't need to faff about making prototypes and muttering curses under your breath when the shapes turn out all wonky... as all the pattern pieces are included in the back of the magazine.

While we're chatting about magazines, the fun felt houses tutorial I designed for Creativity #58 is now available online here.  There are step by step instructions for making the houses, plus some helpful stitching guides provided by the nice folks at docrafts. You'll need to sign up to the site to download the templates, but it's free to join.

Also, is it too early to whisper the word "Christmas"? If you think it is, look away now!

http://bustleandsew.com/product/2015-christmas-collection/

The felt Christmas stocking tutorial I designed for Tuts+ got a lovely mention in the Bustle & Sew 2015 Christmas collection - a digital magazine jam-packed with festive goodness. "More than just a collection of patterns, there’s lots more to discover between the covers of this year’s Christmas special which runs to an enormouse 85 pages in total!  There are nine lovely Bustle & Sew patterns (all those featured on the cover), recipes and articles too – so there’s plenty to enjoy in between planning your Christmas stitching."

You can read more info about the Christmas collection, and flick through a preview of it here. You can find my free Christmas stocking tutorial here
