A Happy Blanket

I am sloooowly working on a patchwork blanket made up of garter-stitched squares, built around some random yarns and already-knitted squares I had leftover from other projects.

I started thinking about the arrangement of the blanket earlier this summer but wasn't 100% happy with what I came up with. So I just concentrated on knitting squares with the yarn I already had and left the decision making for another day.

Well... that day has come!

I've decided that instead of coming up with some carefully-arranged-to-look-random layout of squares I'm going to lay them out in rows in colour order. Something like this:

That photo is not the best as I took it this morning when it was still half-dark out, but I hope it gives you an idea of the colour-chart-esque yumminess that's going to be happening with this blanket.

I had a handful of darker squares in the mix before but they just weren't working. The moment I took them out the remaining colours just popped and I got a big fat grin on my face.

Aren't these shades just fab together?

I've got a few more rows of squares still to knit, so I'll be carefully choosing some more happy colours to add to my current palette. I definitely need some more greens and some oranges too... hmm...

  2. That arrangement is perfect! It looks beautiful. Just wondering what size the squares are and the yarnweight you have used? Thanks, Jen

  3. Thanks guys! I do love a nice bit of colour :)

Jen - the squares are about 14 cm across, I'm using DK yarn on size 8 needles and casting on 30 stitches.

  4. Love the colors and arrangement of squares! Happy to have stumbled upon your blog after seeing your beautiful designs on Pinterest. Wondering how you attached all the squares together exactly? My daughter has a bunch of these made and wanted to make a blanket but didn't know how to do it without it ending up all bumpy and "wonky." Thanks!

  5. Roromom - I use whip stitch to sew my squares together. It's not very fancy but it works for me.

I'll stitch the squares together in alternating directions (so the rows of knitting are horizontal in one square then vertical in the next and so on) always sewing on the same side so the blanket has a neat front and a messier back with visible seams. Take care not to sew your whip stitches too tightly, so you can flatten the seam a bit afterwards.
