Time for a sky blanket update!
My sky blanket is based on Lea Redmond's sky scarf project. I'm knitting a square a day for (almost) a year, based on the colour of the sky at midday.
I'm almost up to date with knitting + sewing all the squares (though I've still got LOTS of ends to sew in).
This is what it looks like at the moment, with all the squares up to (and including) the one for 22nd August:
The weather continues to be very changeable, but you can definitely see more bright blue squares popping up in the recent summer months.
This is how it looked way back in April - it's very cool to see how much it's grown!
Slightly confusingly, I forgot which direction I'd held the blanket up in when I took the earlier photo (oops!) - so in the August pic the first square (from January 1st) is in the bottom left hand corner, and in the April pic the first square is in the top left hand corner.
I think I'm going to have to stitch a small X or something into the first square so I can always easily remember which one it is when I am boring people silly by blahing on about my sky blanket project in future years :)
I told you before, this is sooooooo beautiful !!!! I do love the fact that you show your progress regularly. It is really enjoyable to follow the skyblanket. Keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteIt is great how all the little squares turn into something so beautiful! I love the idea of a blanket where every single piece is the resemblance of a moment :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! I don't knit but I could crochet or sew something similar!!
ReplyDeleteWow, It's defiantely grown a lot! It's looking very good, Lets hope there's lots more blue quares to come! I've just started knitting (yesterday) and I really enjoy it, it's very relaxing!

You could sew a button into the corner to remind you which is the first square.
ReplyDeleteIt looks great.
Aahh ! Your blanket has grown lots (and wow this year is going fast!). I'm still hoping you'll see a rainbow one lunchtime :)
ReplyDeleteIt's absolutely gorgeous!! You have inspired me to start my own. I'm a complete novice knitter... only ever made plain knit scarves before... but I'm going to give a blanket a go! <3
ReplyDeleteI've never knitted a blanket myself because I think my tension is abit dodgy ( mainly too tight ). Your blanket is looking great plus growing quite quickly
ReplyDeleteI thought it was a cool idea when I first read the post but the blanket is turning out beautiful and it's cool there's a story behind it :). Your perseverance is admirable!
ReplyDeleteYour blanket looks awesome! Such a great idea. What an awesome way to document a year in your life.
ReplyDeleteI love that you're doing a square per day. I can barely manage a row per day, but am also going the blanket route. I think mine will be smaller than yours! Keep it up, can't wait to see the finished blanket.

Thanks for all the kind comments, everyone! xxx
ReplyDeleteGill - I've seen people making a crochet sky blanket, and someone else suggested a sky quilt which sounds very cool. This concept has a lot of potential, I think.
Gemma - knitting is VERY relaxing, I hope you continue to enjoy it!
Fluffydog - ah, that's a great idea, thankyou x
Fandango Bizarre - good luck! :)
Meg - Thanks for the link, it's lovely to see your squares & it'll be great to see your blanket when it's finished x
Hi - your sky blanket looks soft and beautiful. What method do you use to join the squares? Im a crocheter and am new to knitting so I'm not familiar with the methods but a lot of knit blankets I see have ridges where the squares are joined and yours don't so I'm curious - thanks! Sher
ReplyDeleteHi Sher - my blanket does have slight ridges where the squares are joined together, they're just all at the back :)
ReplyDeleteThere's a photo of the back of the blanket in this post:

I'm not doing anything fancy to join them together, just sewing the squares together with whip stitch, and then pressing/pulling the seams as flat as I can with my fingers afterwards. That helps a bit but they still end up quite visible though as I'm using a double thickness of yarn so the seams are quite thick.
For your sky blanket how are you dealing with the odd amount of days on the calendar?
ReplyDeleteMichelle - I decided to make Christmas day my final day so I had an even number of squares for the blanket. I'd hoped I could use the final days of the year to finish stitching all the final squares together and actually *finish* the blanket by the end of 2012 but alas I was too busy with work!
