Sky Blanket, Days 1-106

I finally managed to get a snap of the whole of my in-progress sky blanket at the weekend!

My sky blanket is based on Lea Redmond's sky scarf project. I'm knitting a square a day for (almost) a year, based on the colour of the sky at midday.

Here's all the squares up to (and including) the one for April 15th:

The squares go horizontally, left to right along each long row (like the days on a calendar). I'm just holding it this way round in the photo cos it's easier! The first square is in the top right hand corner.

I'm writing the sky colours on my calandar each day, and then marking all the squares off on this chart as I sew them on.

The squares are very quick and easy to knit but there are SO MANY ends to weave in as each square is knitted with two strands of yarn so the colours can be blended together ... so that's 4 ends per square and several hundred sewn in so far!

  2. This is looking great. The colour combinations are lovely. I expect it's been a row of grey squares this week though if you've had weather like us!

  3. Love the idea, I have been taking photos of my sky for the last two days because I love the movement of clouds and the seasons. I might have to knit instead.

  5. Oooh lovely!
Hurrah for two colours at once. I find that combining colours makes my cheap acrylic dk look much nicer when I crochet with it.

Did you know you'd been mentioned on the SewMakeBelieve blog? http://www.sewmakebelieve.co.uk/2012/04/13/cool-craft-blog-bugs-and-fishes/

  7. I was just thinking about this the other day and wondering how it was going to look. It is gorgeous! I love how the colours are so varied and the randomness of it, okay, I just covet it.

  8. Thanks for the comments everyone, I am really enjoying working on this project :)

CarlaK - do let me know if you end up knitting your own blanket, it would be great to see what you come up with!

Jacqui - there have been quite a few grey squares this week! One day the sky was bright blue with a few white fluffy clouds at about a quarter to midday... and the same again at quarter past, but at midday (when I pick my colours for the day) the whole sky was filled with dark grey rainclouds! Ah, springtime...

Dichohecho - thanks for the link x

Clair - I could never in a million years *design* something that looked this random and organic, I'd have to have a pattern or a plan of some kind. It's very fun to have all the colour decisions made for me by the weather :)

  11. Hello!! This is a great idea! I wanted to make a square blanket when I was a kid, just my squares were not really squares and if I was lucky to get an actual square piece, they were all different sizes :) I am thinking of making something similar, but will definitely not have the nerves to make one per day... And the idea to make them according to the sky colour is just lovely!

  12. Silly Little Sheep - best of luck with your blanket if you go ahead with it! The great thing about making a blanket from small squares is that the squares are so quick to knit that the blanket grows and grows without ever feeling like hard work :)
