Red Birds

I've been sewing lots of bird brooches recently, doing a bit here and a bit there... until suddenly there's a whole flock of them finished!

Robins, cardinals and bullfinches, all ready to fly off to new homes :)

UPDATE: my robin brooch design is now available as a printable PDF sewing pattern, and it'll soon be joined by more bird designs!

Country Living

The April issue of Country Living (UK) is now in the shops...

... and look what's on page 14:

Three of my felt bird brooches :)

Country Living is such a gorgeous magazine, it's wonderful to have my birdies featured.

Also wonderful - the flurry of sweet messages from friends, customers, blog readers & Twitter friends over the past few days, saying they'd got their subscriber copies and were delighted to see my birds. People are so nice!

Birds in Progress

Thanks for all your bird suggestions guys, I really appreciate it! (please do keep them coming!)

I've had lots of fun looking up the birds you've mentioned and I'm very much looking forward to sitting down with a pencil and some paper and starting lots of birdie sketches in preparation for some new designs :)

This week, in between emails and admin and parcel-packing and all that other stuff, I've been gradually cutting out lots and lots of pieces in preparation for restocking my current range of bird brooches... there are teeny felt shapes everywhere:

It will take me a long while to actually sew all those birds together, but I'm trying to be extra organised this year and cut pieces out in batches so I've always got some ready for when I fancy doing some sewing. Well, that's the plan, anyway!

Calling all bird lovers!

I need your help today, lovely readers.

I'm working on some sketches for new bird brooch designs, and I'd love to know if you have a favourite kind of bird.

I've already made bullfinches...

... goldfinches....
... bluetits...

... robins...

... greenfinches....
... chaffinches...
... cardinals...
... coaltits...
...and snowy owls...

... but what should I make next?

Bits and Pieces

A few things I'm making at the moment...

... cutting out pieces for white & peach cherry blossoms, and some bullfinches... sewing together some coal tits ... and embroidering some oak leaves.

A very nice surprise

One of my bird brooches popped up in an unexpected place yesterday - in the Christmas gift guide in the Metro.
Metro is a free newspaper for commuters in 16 UK cities - 1.3 million copies are distributed every weekday! (1.3 million! eek!).

As part of their Christmas gift guide, they featured one of my lovely stockists All Things Original and included my Goldfinch brooch in their selection.

The first I heard about this was a mystery flurry of orders, and kind messages from people saying they'd spotted one of my brooches in the paper. Very exciting stuff!

Finished Goldfinches

I've been doing lots of tinkering with my online shops this weekend, adding a few items, editing a few descriptions and translating lots of my DaWanda listings into German. I've also been taking advantage of the spring sunshine to retake a few product photos that got lost when my hard-drive died last year. Lots of bits and pieces of admin, basically! Dull, but very necessary.

When I was taking photos I couldn't resist taking a quick snap of lots of finished Goldfinch brooches all lined up before I packed them away...

All lined up

I spent yesterday afternoon listening to a Hercule Poirot audiobook and doing lots of sewing - really lovely after a week filled with emails and packing and admin and other non-creative stuff.

I was working on goldfinch brooches and white & peach cherry blossoms which will become brooches and hairbands.

Whenever I make things in batches, I always line them up neatly. It gives me a real sense of progress as I work down the row adding the next felt shape, etc, and I love seeing them all lined up finished before I pack them away in my storage boxes.

I'll be sewing these onto brooch backs and hairbands this afternoon then it's on to the next thing in my wip box...
